Adoption of the CCSS

Currently,45 states, five territories, and the Department of Defense Education Agency have adopted both the ELA and math Common Core State Standards (CCSS).  Like the development of the CCSS, adoption was a state-led process that required each state to adopt the standards as stipulated by state law or regulation. The development and adoption of the CCSS was voluntary and a matter left to states to address individually. In the vast majority of states it is the responsibility of the state board of education to adopt state education standards (several states give this responsibility to the chief state school officer or the legislature). All states went through their formal standards adoption process when they adopted the CCSS. Kentucky was the first state to adopt the CCSS. Minnesota elected to only adopt the ELA standards, and four states have at this time, elected not .to adopt the standards
