Common Core

This guide was created to provide additional support and guidance for state boards of education as they implement the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Since scopes of authority and education governance differ by state, this guide is meant to be used by states in the way that fits their needs. Areas of potential concern for state boards are featured along with recommendations on how boards might address these issues. Overall, a state board should focus its role in CCSS implementation on ensuring that board policies supporting CCSS implementation are in place and that state board policies that impede or complicate CCSS implementation are eliminated or changed. Doing this will require state boards to do a comprehensive scan of their policies, as the CCSS impact virtually every facet of public education. In addition, state boards should work to communicate to the public and educators what CCSS implementation means and how the State Board of Education (SBOE) plans to support implementation, alignment of other key areas and address the issues that arise as a result of implementation.
