Executive Summary

Incentives

Encouraging Participation

Policy makers looking to engage educators should implement incentives to compensate them for the longer hours and extra work. Consider the following options for teachers:

  • Offer paid release time and include travel time
  • Louisiana reimbursed teachers for mileage and covered the cost of substitute teachers
  • Delaware used some of its Race to the Top funding to cover the cost of release time. “We thought there was a higher purpose around this work and showed teachers that we valued their time,” said Dan Cruce, former Chief of Staff at the Delaware Department of Education.
  • Dr. Jesse Register, Director of Schools in Nashville, purposely schedules faculty meetings after school to ensure teachers will be able to attend without missing class time.
