Introduction

The primary goal of any evaluation should be to help teachers become inspiring, effective and capable of leading the academic growth of diverse learners.
 

No matter the career path, all employees need regular and ongoing feedback for professional growth. Teachers deserve the same support—to be successful in the classroom, educators need to be evaluated consistently to receive the constructive feedback necessary to continuously improve and maximize every student’s potential to achieve at high levels. Developing and implementing this type of high-quality evaluation is a crucial step to ensure that every classroom in America is led by a top-notch teacher, and that every student—regardless of income level, ethnicity, or zip code—is provided with the tools, skills and supports necessary to succeed academically.

Embarking on Reforms

States that have yet to implement reforms could benefit from the experiences of those already in the implementation stages, where policymakers have already recognized that it is just as important for educators to understand, support and buy-in to the new systems as it is for the systems to meet higher design standards for effectiveness and utility. All states deep into implementation have experienced some set-backs and challenges along the way, but these should be seen more as growing pains than failures. All of these issues can be overcome, and by tracking how states deal with roadblocks as they experience them, other states can avoid running into similar problems.

As an organization we believe that the best road forward will be for policymakers and educators to problem solve and work together on the development, execution and refinement of new evaluation systems and policies that will lead to greater impact in the classroom.
